Mother Of All Short Squeezes (MOASS)

Finance has its short squeezes, and a very large one is called the “Mother Of All Short Squeezes” (MOASS). “Dan Dorfman, CNBC’s financial correspondent, reported a money manager’s prediction that ‘the mother of all short squeezes’ soon will affect the price of NordicTrack’s stock” was printed in the Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN) on February 16, 1994. “The mother of all X” is a popular meme that was used as the “Mother Of All Battles” in the Gulf War in Iraq (1990-91).
“If oil is not setting up for the MOASS (mother of all short squeezes) in the medium term, I will be shocked” was posted on Twitter by satan stan account on February 17, 2009. “MOASS” want viral in January 2021 with the GameStop short squeeze.
Wikipedia: Short squeeze
In the stock market, a short squeeze is a rapid increase in the price of a stock owing primarily to technical factors in the market rather than underlying fundamentals. A short squeeze can occur when there is a lack of supply and an excess of demand for the stock due to short sellers covering (liquidating) their positions.
Wikipedia: GameStop short squeeze
In January 2021, a short squeeze of GameStop stock and other securities took place on various stock exchanges causing major financial consequences for certain hedge funds. The short squeeze increased the stock price of GameStop, a video-game retailer, almost 190 times from its record low, hitting a high of nearly $500 per share on January 28, 2021, and causing large losses for short sellers.
Wikipedia: Snowclone
“The mother of all X”, a hyperbole that has been used to refer to something as “great” or “the greatest of its kind”, became a popular snowclone template in the 1990s. The phrase entered American popular culture in September 1990 at the outset of the Gulf War, when Saddam Hussein’s Revolutionary Command Council warned the U.S.-led Coalition against military action in Kuwait with the statement “Let everyone understand that this battle is going to become the mother of all battles.” The phrase was repeated in a January 1991 speech by Saddam Hussein. A calque from Arabic, the snowclone gained popularity in the media and was adapted for phrases such as “the mother of all bombs” and New Zealand’s “Mother of all Budgets”.
16 February 1994, Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), “NordicTrack Inc. and Soloflex both claim victory in court decisions over their advertising dispute” by Josephine Marcotty, pg. 1D, col. 2:
The stock of NordicTrack’s parent company, CML Group Inc., rose 7.6 percent to $21.25 Tuesday, for reasons unrelated to the company’s legal dispute with Soloflex. Dan Dorfman, CNBC’s financial correspondent, reported a money manager’s prediction that “the mother of all short squeezes” soon will affect the price of NordicTrack’s stock.
8 May 1995, USA Today (McLean, VA), “Has bond market rally gone too far?” by Bill Montague, pg. 1B:
Some investors were so sure bond prices would fall they sold short, meaning they borrowed bonds and then sold them, hoping to buy them back later at a cheaper price. When prices rose, they had to buy bonds to replace the ones they borrowed. “It’s the mother of all short squeezes,” says Louis Crandall, economist at R.H. Wrightson, a brokerage firm.

Hedge funds lose $30 billion on VW infinity squeeze
DECEMBER 9, 2018 | RP
Volkswagen Infinity Squeeze.  The October 2008 short squeeze on shares of Volkswagen AG has since been referred to as the “Mother of all Squeezes”. It was also perhaps the earliest use of the term “Infinity Squeeze”.  It was during the middle of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, and Volkswagen was increasingly being viewed as a potential bankruptcy candidate.  In other words, Volkswagen was viewed as an exceptionally attractive short candidate.  However, at very depth of the crisis, an orchestrated short squeeze on VW shares caused VW to briefly become the most valuable company in the world, worth more by market cap than Exxon Mobil.

A lot of people especially potential $GME investors and current ones have been asking, “What in the world is a #MOASS”? So I thought I’d shed some light on the matter… Firstly, a MOASS stands for the Mother Of All Short Squeezes which refers to

stock price due to the basic laws of supply and demand. The legend of the MOASS is even more exciting because it represents a scenario where a stock has 1)gone up significantly 2) been heavily shorter for a long period of time
Daniel@billionswithad·Jan 21
3)there is a significantly reduced number or shares available in the float or none at all 4)the stock has incredible upward and bullish momentum 5) something fundamentally has changed in how the general market perceives the company’s valuation…
