“The most common form of robbery is inflation”

Inflation has been called a form of robbery because it makes money worth less. ” It can be truly said, to-day, ‘Inflation is robbery’” was printed in the Cincinnati (OH) Daily Times on September 30, 1875.

“Inflation Branded ‘Legalized Robbery’” was a headline in the Ogden (UT) Standard-Examiner on November 22, 1934. “Inflation is legalized robbery that steals from those who are thrifty and who care for themselves” was printed in the Dallas (TX) Morning News on February 12, 1957.

“The most common form of robbery is inflation” was posted on Twitter by Roger Ver on July 26, 2020.

“Inflation is theft. Taxation is robbery” and “Taxation is robbery. Inflation is theft” are related sayings.

WHO would be hurt by an inflation of the currency? Well, the Savings Bank depositors, for one class. (...) It can be truly said, to-day, “Inflation is robbery.”

INFLATION IS ROBBERY, AND YOUR GOVERNMENT IS DOING THE STEALING
Charley Reese of The Sentinel Staff
March 8, 1992
This is one of an occasional series of columns about how the government injures you. If this were not a family newspaper, I could express that much more graphically.

This particular form of injury is robbery. Maybe you think that the government doesn’t rob you. Well, read on. The modus operandi, as the cops would say, is robbery by inflation.

The fact is that inflation is robbery.  It depletes the goods of some (depending on their position in markets) or all (depending on the severity) without their knowledge, and only the government can do it without going out of business.  It is a more sublime form of theft than taxation, and always the resort of governments who cannot risk the political affront of taxtion on the population.

Given a proper understanding of what inflation is — it is the debasement of a fiat currency through the overprinting of money without any stated limits — there is only one party responsible: the government’s banking authority.

What’s ironic is that this shiny Fed money printer seems to negate the need to tax people. The real highway robbery is inflation, it steals your money very slowly and quietly. Until it’s not so slow and quiet anymore to exchange a bucket of cash for a dozen eggs.
