“Trade what you see, not what you think”

“Trade what you see, not what you think/believe” has been cited in print since at least 1999 and has been credited to trading educator Joe Ross. The adage means to trade on what the market does (what you see), not on your own opinions of what the market should do (what you think).

Trade What You See
By MICHAEL KAHN
When the market makes strong breakout moves, we have to accept them even if we do not believe in their worth.
THERE IS A BATTLE THAT EVERY chart watcher fights when what is actually happening is not what should be happening. For many, the stock market should not be rallying, but the raw reality is that the bulls have taken back the controls.

In technical analysis circles, there is a mantra, “Trade what you see, not what you think.”

Joe Ross said it best when he said: Trade what you see, not what you think! Build your system, and then trade following the rules based on the market action you see.
