“Why is it called a strip mall when there aren’t any strippers?”

A “strip mall” doesn’t have anything to do with “stripping,” but there are jokes. “RT @TheUnsayable: I can’t find any strippers in this strip mall. Gonna check this donut shop” was posted on Twitter by Dwigt Rortugal on February 21, 2010.

“Why is it called a strip mall when there arent any strippers?” was posted on Twitter by Meg Vlad on February 11, 2012. “I went to a strip mall and didnt find any strippers. This was a rip off” was posted on Reddit—Oneliners on January 2, 2020.

“I just totally misunderstood the meaning of ‘Strip Mall’ and could one of you guys send bail money?,” “I misunderstood the meaning of ‘strip mall’ and now I’m not allowed back,” “Strip malls are a whole lot more family friendly than they sound,” “Strip malls aren’t as fun as they sound,”  “Strip malls aren’t as sexy as they sound” and “Strip malls sound way cooler than they are” are related sayings.

Wikipedia: Strip mall
A strip mall (also called a shopping plaza, shopping center, mini-mall, or shopping parade) is an open-air shopping center where the stores are arranged in a row, with a sidewalk in front. Strip malls are typically developed as a unit and have large parking lots in front. They face major traffic arterials and tend to be self-contained with few pedestrian connections to surrounding neighborhoods.

Who decided that a shopping plaza should be called a “strip mall”?  Seems misleading.

I found out they’re building a new strip mall in my town. I was disappointed when I found out there wouldn’t be any strippers.
